THE CHALLENGE
Despite the rich history of community organizing for civil rights, labor, women’s rights, immigration, and LGBTQ rights over the past 80 years, little research has been conducted on the processes and models utilized to make these critical social shifts. Even less research has been conducted with the individuals who lead these actions and who have dedicated their lives to community organizing. The challenge is to dig deep into the lives of Black social justice leaders to understand the long-term influence of BOLD programming and Black leadership across movements.
THE APPROACH
A longitudinal study engages with one group over several time points. In this study, participants were selected who attended BOLD training over the past 5 years. These participants include leaders who have been working for social change for 6-20 years. These leaders are interviewed yearly. Topics covered include the impact of leadership training, personal and professional challenges, successes and changes in consciousness. Additionally, Social Insights has partnered with BOLD to gather feedback on their multi-state engagement with participants beyond training.
HIGHLIGHTS
1) Participants have engaged in two years of the study to-date.
2) The report included a deep-dive into the personal experiences of 12 leaders.
3) The report provided actionable insights for the organization and overall movement to expand and improve.
4) The report included an analysis of BOLD’s role in revolutionizing social justice training.
